Obviously it is "cooler" to prefer the non-voiceover version of bladerunner, but dammit, I saw it first with the voiceover when I saw BR at a drive-in theater when I was 12 back in '82, and that is how I first loved the film. It seemed to me to be an homage to the '40s-'50s crime noir detective films... existing peacefully alongside the action on screen. The ridley scott director's cut is fine as well, with a different set of strengths and weaknesses, but not necessarily "better." what say you all?

PS...
I think the consumer is led to believe that the original version of a film released in theaters will never be as good as the "director's cut" that will inevitably come out on DVD. The cynic in me sees this as the logical progression of marketing tactics to increase film profits, by leading us into this cycle of paying repeatedly for viewing the same film. This may be fodder for another discussion elsewhere though.

Towards the end of the book, Deckard is somewhere out by Oregon, and he keeps referring to himself as Mercer. Does this mean he's an android, just like Mercer, or is it opened to interpretation? Any thoughts.

"Bereaved Cat Owner Gets $50,000 Clone
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Published: December 23, 2004

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 22 (AP) - The first cloned-to-order pet sold in the United States is Little Nicky, a 9-week-old kitten delivered to a Texan saddened by the loss of a cat she had owned for 17 years.

The kitten, which cost $50,000, was cloned from a cat, Nicky, who died last year and whose owner banked the DNA that was used for the clone.

"He is identical," the woman told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "His personality is the same."

She insisted on anonymity because of fears of being a target of cloning opponents.

As Little Nicky, who was delivered two weeks ago, frolics in his new home, the cloning and sale have reignited ethical and scientific debates.

The company that created Little Nicky, Genetic Savings and Clone of Sausalito, Calif., said it hoped to produce the first cloned dog, for a much more lucrative market than cats, by May.

A critic, David Magnus, co-director of the Center for Biomedical Ethics at Stanford, said: "It's morally problematic and a little reprehensible. For $50,000, she could have provided homes for a lot of strays.""

It's even in San Francisco!!!

God I love reality sometimes!

In addition to being visually magnificent, I love this movie for its depth. It took me a long time to start understanding the themes, and I'm sure I missed a lot of them. Dunno if you like that kind of conversations, but well.. what do you think of that anyway? Its mostly leads.. I can't stick it all together yet.

I think the main theme is : what does it mean to be human?
In the beginning of the movie, the replicant doesnt understand why he should save that turtle (lying on the back in the desert). In the end, Roy saves Deckard and redeems himself (dove flying from his hand).

Deckard kills replicants considering them as machines. In that he shows the same lack of pity as the replicants (hence the question of Rachel asking if he tried the test on himself). But he eventually falls in love with her.

There's also the theme of God, when Roy goes to Tyrell Corp to meet his maker. He beats him at chess, asks him to extend his life, and -incapable of facing his fate- kills him in rage.
It sounds awefully like a picture of humans trying to live longer through scientific progress, trying to surpass their maker, and eventually killing him with their pride and inability to accept the inevitable.

Well that's some of the leads I got. dunno how they all connect or if they do. but I'd like to know what you think of that, and what other themes you see in there.

PS :
What about JR Sebastian (whose fast aging illness making him somehow close to replicants and who seems to be very much into creating artificial life) ?
What about the policeman? I think he spares Rachel in the end ("too bad she's got to die too, but its our common fate" seems to me he's saying he'll let her die of natural death).

hmm.. ok I'd better stop there or this post will go on forever...

* "FUTURE NOIR," Gorney Bravin & Lee, 534 West 26th Street, (212) 352-8372, through March 6. An examination of the artistic influence of Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner," this show's theme is little more than a mixture of gallery artists, the usual suspects and guilt by association. The unquestionable standout is Amy Globus's video "Electric Sheep," which shows two octopuses drifting and squeezing through different parts of an aquarium to the suitably swoony (manipulated) sounds of Emmylou Harris's love ballad "Wrecking Ball" (Smith).
