History was made this weekend in New York City as Platina Luna Blade Runner, a year and a half old male with a shimmering blue-gray coat and emerald green eyes triumphed over 248 other cats in 41 breeds to become the first Russian Blue cat to win the Cat Fanciers’ Association title of Best Of The Best.

* Disc 5: The Workprint (now I can die)
Metal toy Spinner replica (so cool! -- and I just saw the original in Seattle at the sci-fi museum)
Metal origami unicorn
Lenticular motion film clip (this is wholly bad-ass)
Collector's images, with art design and storyboard art

Lots of disc commentary by just about everybody. The stylish faux-metal (plastic) case is marked "Voight-Kampff" by the handle.

Awesome -- everything I hoped for and more. Now I have to restrain myself from buying the Blu-Ray version...these cases are limited edition and numbered. Mine is 069069! I am such a fucking geek.

The Voiceover...

Obviously it is "cooler" to prefer the non-voiceover version of bladerunner, but dammit, I saw it first with the voiceover when I saw BR at a drive-in theater when I was 12 back in '82, and that is how I first loved the film. It seemed to me to be an homage to the '40s-'50s crime noir detective films... existing peacefully alongside the action on screen. The ridley scott director's cut is fine as well, with a different set of strengths and weaknesses, but not necessarily "better." what say you all?

PS...
I think the consumer is led to believe that the original version of a film released in theaters will never be as good as the "director's cut" that will inevitably come out on DVD. The cynic in me sees this as the logical progression of marketing tactics to increase film profits, by leading us into this cycle of paying repeatedly for viewing the same film. This may be fodder for another discussion elsewhere though.

If, as everyone seems to think, Deckard was a replicant, why didn't he use his super strength to defend himself in the fight scene with Roy Batty (played by Rutger Hauer)? Was it because he was not Nexus-6?

I'm not trying to brag (well, I guess I am), but I thought I'd just drop a line and say thanks to all the folks out there who have always supported Blade Runner, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, and the overall vision of people like P K Dick.

My father is Brian Kelly, the Executive Producer of the original film and the guy who decided to make the book into a movie.

Blade Runner was his only successful run at making a film. The forces of nature, Hollywood and his own misfortune conspired against him after this one success... But what a success!

I just finished reading the book. I just have a few questions if anybody can answer them. Towards the end of the book, Deckard is somewhere out by Oregon, and he keeps referring to himself as Mercer. Does this mean he's an android, just like Mercer, or is it opened to interpretation? Any thoughts.

I may be totaly paranoid bout this, but in Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Phillip K Dick's book which Blade Runner is based on, the birds die off first. that's why Tyrell Corp has a fake owl. today in Turky 12,000 birds, chickens and turkeys were destroyed.

I am thinking Some say hey its an evil Bill Gates and Microsoft. While others will say futuristic, in control, master, Thunder Ruler.

Perhaps stuborn. I think the dictionary lists it as the God of Battle....

I guess I am trying to decide it this is something I want to call something/someone..

It's 11 Pacific time and our movie is playing on FX. I don't remember the last time I've seen the theatrical release version and the VOICEOVER is taking me back. Does anyone know who claims authorship of Deckard's hard-boiled noir narration? It sure doesn't sound like H. Fancher or D. Peoples.

"Bereaved Cat Owner Gets $50,000 Clone
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Published: December 23, 2004

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 22 (AP) - The first cloned-to-order pet sold in the United States is Little Nicky, a 9-week-old kitten delivered to a Texan saddened by the loss of a cat she had owned for 17 years.

The kitten, which cost $50,000, was cloned from a cat, Nicky, who died last year and whose owner banked the DNA that was used for the clone.

"He is identical," the woman told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "His personality is the same."

She insisted on anonymity because of fears of being a target of cloning opponents.

As Little Nicky, who was delivered two weeks ago, frolics in his new home, the cloning and sale have reignited ethical and scientific debates.

The company that created Little Nicky, Genetic Savings and Clone of Sausalito, Calif., said it hoped to produce the first cloned dog, for a much more lucrative market than cats, by May.

A critic, David Magnus, co-director of the Center for Biomedical Ethics at Stanford, said: "It's morally problematic and a little reprehensible. For $50,000, she could have provided homes for a lot of strays.""

It's even in San Francisco!!!

God I love reality sometimes!

seeking help from the group mind. i'm using dick's novel in a college freshman comp.class that i'm teaching. the class is based on issues surrounding dream/reality. using texts including richard linklater's film waking life, kurasawa's dreams, readings from freud-jung-laberge, lightman's einstein's dreams, neil gaiman's sandman. was planning on reading the dick novel and then showing "the new renaissance," the short from the animatrix so that i could focus on the nature of consciousness, as well as "what is rea(ity)?" (sorry for the long intro.)

does anyone have any other ideas on interesting questions/approaches to thinking about this novel that i might borrow? ANY suggestions are appreciated. (i've read the novel several times and watched the film too many, but i'm looking for some fresh angles.) thank you.

Themes

In addition to being visually magnificent, I love this movie for its depth. It took me a long time to start understanding the themes, and I'm sure I missed a lot of them. Dunno if you like that kind of conversations, but well.. what do you think of that anyway? Its mostly leads.. I can't stick it all together yet.

I think the main theme is : what does it mean to be human?
In the beginning of the movie, the replicant doesnt understand why he should save that turtle (lying on the back in the desert). In the end, Roy saves Deckard and redeems himself (dove flying from his hand).

Deckard kills replicants considering them as machines. In that he shows the same lack of pity as the replicants (hence the question of Rachel asking if he tried the test on himself). But he eventually falls in love with her.

There's also the theme of God, when Roy goes to Tyrell Corp to meet his maker. He beats him at chess, asks him to extend his life, and -incapable of facing his fate- kills him in rage.
It sounds awefully like a picture of humans trying to live longer through scientific progress, trying to surpass their maker, and eventually killing him with their pride and inability to accept the inevitable.

Well that's some of the leads I got. dunno how they all connect or if they do. but I'd like to know what you think of that, and what other themes you see in there.

PS :
What about JR Sebastian (whose fast aging illness making him somehow close to replicants and who seems to be very much into creating artificial life) ?
What about the policeman? I think he spares Rachel in the end ("too bad she's got to die too, but its our common fate" seems to me he's saying he'll let her die of natural death).

hmm.. ok I'd better stop there or this post will go on forever...

Superhero Fan Films

I know a lot of people get intimidated by doing Superhero Fan Films or sci-fi films, other than Star Wars, because of the huge amount of special effects needed. Although there's Adobe Aftereffects, how have you overcome this occurence and what are you working on or finished that would be a superhero fan film?

FUTURE NOIR gallery show NYC

any fans in NYC might want to check this show out. sounds interesting:
* "FUTURE NOIR," Gorney Bravin & Lee, 534 West 26th Street, (212) 352-8372, through March 6. An examination of the artistic influence of Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner," this show's theme is little more than a mixture of gallery artists, the usual suspects and guilt by association. The unquestionable standout is Amy Globus's video "Electric Sheep," which shows two octopuses drifting and squeezing through different parts of an aquarium to the suitably swoony (manipulated) sounds of Emmylou Harris's love ballad "Wrecking Ball" (Smith).

I have an umbrella with a light up neon-blue handle... anybody else seen these? I got it a few years ago online, but have not been able to find it again since. i get really lame results when I google it too. I'd love to get another one in another color... it's really cool.
